The existing landscape in this westerly portion of the park is a contrived pastoral landscape. Over the years the state of both windmills and the gardens surrounding them have deteriorated significantly. Our design for the Murphy Windmill Gardens in Golden Gate Park draws its influence from formal Dutch garden design. The north / south axial alignment of the canal walk and the view corridor to the Dutch windmill serve to focus the visitor's attention on different features of the surrounding landscape. The wave hedges in the formal garden area nicely counterbalance the otherwise strict formality of the space. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the processional canal walk. As well as framing views, the corridors provide an experience of moving back and forth from an enclosed space to an open one. Scattered under the existing tree canopy on the eastern side of the soccer fields are 12 picnic tables, some in shade, some in full sun. Other new additions to the Murphy Windmill gardens are a community center building, a new formal entry from the Great Highway, a pond, and the restoration of the Millwright's Cottage.
